Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to delineate a part of China's long-distance maritime trade with South East Asia in the period from the mid-10h to the mid-14th century. This will be done by delineating the special role in it played by a particular type of Dehua ceramics of that period and also consider the other Chinese ceramics excavated by the author at Satingpra in South Thailand. The citadel of Satingpra has yielded the highest total number of Chinese ceramics found in South East Asia to date, among them a remarkable presence of high quality wares from the Ou, Longquan, Dehua and Jingdezhen kilns and none of the low-grade Chinese trade ware, copies of these kilns so typical of other South East Asian trading sites.

Satingpra was both an ancient royal city and a former port on the east coast of South Thailand in the South China Sea. It was the principal site in an archaeological cluster of nine dependant sites along the east coast, with additional, closely related sites along the west coast near Trang and Paliang The author of this paper conducted environmental surveys, pollen coring and excavations there for 25 years, starting in 1971. They revealed the following key features: the location of the sites on a narrow part of peninsular Thailand that facilitated trans-isthmian crossings: the rainforest there undergoes a transition from the wet, evergreen forest of Malaysia to the semi-evergreen forest of Thailand. This is the famous Isthmus of Kra and botanically constitutes then Kra Ecotone In that ecotone grow some of the most valuable incenses of South East Asia, which were very highly priced in Song China. Their contribution to the maritime trade between South East Asia and South China explains the exceptionally high quality and high density of the Chinese ceramics sent here as well as the morphology of the finest ceramic types.
